著者プロフィール

　ジーン・ウェブスター（１８７６～１９１６）
　ニューヨーク生まれ。父は出版社の経営者、母は文豪マーク・トウェインの姪という、文学的に恵まれた環境で育ち、学生時代から新聞に記事を書くなどしていた。大学在学中から孤児院などの社会事業に興味を持ち、作品にも多くの影響を与える。そうして書き溜めた短編を収めた「パティー大学に行く」を出版するが、当初はなかなか認められなかったという。
　作家として成功してからも、社会事業に関心を持ち続けた彼女の一番の傑作は、３６歳のとき執筆した「あしながおじさん」であることは有名。
　１９１５年に結婚。翌年、女児を出産するが、その直後４０歳の若さでこの世を去った。

Blue Wednesday
The first Wednesday in every month was a Perfectly Awful Day--a dayto be awaited with dread, endured with courage and forgotten with haste. Every floor must be spotless, every chair dustless, and every bedwithout a wrinkle. Ninety-seven squirming little orphans must bescrubbed and combed and buttoned into freshly starched ginghams;and all ninety-seven reminded of their manners, and told to say,`Yes, sir,' `No, sir,' whenever a Trustee spoke.
It was a distressing time; and poor Jerusha Abbott, being theoldest orphan, had to bear the brunt of it. But this particularfirst Wednesday, like its predecessors, finally dragged itselfto a close. Jerusha escaped from the pantry where she had beenmaking sandwiches for the asylum's guests, and turned upstairsto accomplish her regular work. Her special care was room F,where eleven little tots, from four to seven, occupied eleven littlecots set in a row. Jerusha assembled her charges, straightened theirrumpled frocks, wiped their noses, and started them in an orderlyand willing line towards the dining-room to engage themselvesfor a blessed half hour with bread and milk and prune pudding.
Then she dropped down on the window seat and leaned throbbing templesagainst the cool glass. She had been on her feet since five that morning,doing everybody's bidding, scolded and hurried by a nervous matron. Mrs. Lippett, behind the scenes, did not always maintain that calmand pompous dignity with which she faced an audience of Trusteesand lady visitors. Jerusha gazed out across a broad stretch offrozen lawn, beyond the tall iron paling that marked the confinesof the asylum, down undulating ridges sprinkled with country estates,to the spires of the village rising from the midst of bare trees.
