　ヘンリー・デイヴィッド・ソロー（１８１７～１８６２）
　アメリカの作家・哲学者・博物学者。自由意志論と個人主義の理想が、実生活の中にとりいれられることを身をもって示した。
　マサチューセッツ州コンコードに生まれ、ハーバード大学で学んだ。１８３０年代末期から４０年代初頭にかけてコンコードやニューヨーク州スターテン島で教鞭をとり、家庭教師もした。
　１８４６年、ソローはメキシコ戦争（１８４６～１８４８）に荷担することになると考え、人頭税の支払いを拒否して、投獄された。その立場を明確にした「市民の抵抗」（１８４９）は、今日では原題の「国家政府への抵抗」で広く読みつがれている。遺作を編集したものに、有名な論文「ウォーキング」を収録した「脱線」（１８６４）、「メーンの森」（１８６４）、「ケープ・コッド」（１８６５）、「カナダのヤンキー」（１８６６）などがある。１９３３年は、論文「種の分散」を中心とする、自然史研究についての未開発作品をあつめた「種の中の信念」が出版された。
　多くの作品のうち、生前に出版されたのは「コンコードとメリマック川で一週間」（１８４９）と「ウォールデン、森の生活」（１８５４）の２冊だけで、他のほとんどの作品は、死後、友人たちが日記や原稿や手紙をもとに編集したものである。

解説

　ソロー『ウォールデン（森の生活）』の英語版原書。
　著者ソローは、ウォールデンの池のほとりの小屋で、「本当の生活」をみつけるために、できるだけ単純な生活をし、自然観察に没頭していると述べている。そして、この独居生活の試みをつづった本書は、自然とともに生きることの意味を新たに問いかけた。アメリカン・ロマンティックスの源流ソローの代表作！　（本編は上巻です。）

When I wrote the following pages, or rather the bulk of them, Ilived alone, in the woods, a mile from any neighbor, in a housewhich I had built myself, on the shore of Walden Pond, in Concord,Massachusetts, and earned my living by the labor of my hands only.I lived there two years and two months. At present I am a sojournerin civilized life again. I should not obtrude my affairs so much on the notice of myreaders if very particular inquiries had not been made by mytownsmen concerning my mode of life, which some would callimpertinent, though they do not appear to me at all impertinent,but, considering the circumstances, very natural and pertinent.Some have asked what I got to eat; if I did not feel lonesome; if Iwas not afraid; and the like. Others have been curious to learnwhat portion of my income I devoted to charitable purposes; andsome, who have large families, how many poor children I maintained.I will therefore ask those of my readers who feel no particularinterest in me to pardon me if I undertake to answer some of thesequestions in this book. In most books, the I, or first person, isomitted; in this it will be retained; that, in respect to egotism,is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is,after all, always the first person that is speaking. I should nottalk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew aswell. Unfortunately, I am confined to this theme by the narrownessof my experience. Moreover, I, on my side, require of every writer,first or last, a simple and sincere account of his own life, and notmerely what he has heard of other men's lives; some such account ashe would send to his kindred from a distant land; for if he haslived sincerely, it must have been in a distant land to me. Perhapsthese pages are more particularly addressed to poor students. Asfor the rest of my readers, they will accept such portions as applyto them. I trust that none will stretch the seams in putting on thecoat, for it may do good service to him whom it fits.
