著者プロフィール

　ヘンリー・デイヴィッド・ソロー（１８１７～１８６２）
　アメリカの作家・哲学者・博物学者。自由意志論と個人主義の理想が、実生活の中にとりいれられることを身をもって示した。
　マサチューセッツ州コンコードに生まれ、ハーバード大学で学んだ。１８３０年代末期から４０年代初頭にかけてコンコードやニューヨーク州スターテン島で教鞭をとり、家庭教師もした。
　１８４６年、ソローはメキシコ戦争（１８４６～１８４８）に荷担することになると考え、人頭税の支払いを拒否して、投獄された。その立場を明確にした「市民の抵抗」（１８４９）は、今日では原題の「国家政府への抵抗」で広く読みつがれている。遺作を編集したものに、有名な論文「ウォーキング」を収録した「脱線」（１８６４）、「メーンの森」（１８６４）、「ケープ・コッド」（１８６５）、「カナダのヤンキー」（１８６６）などがある。１９３３年は、論文「種の分散」を中心とする、自然史研究についての未開発作品をあつめた「種の中の信念」が出版された。
　多くの作品のうち、生前に出版されたのは「コンコードとメリマック川で一週間」（１８４９）と「ウォールデン、森の生活」（１８５４）の２冊だけで、他のほとんどの作品は、死後、友人たちが日記や原稿や手紙をもとに編集したものである。

The Village
After hoeing, or perhaps reading and writing, in the forenoon, Iusually bathed again in the pond, swimming across one of its covesfor a stint, and washed the dust of labor from my person, orsmoothed out the last wrinkle which study had made, and for theafternoon was absolutely free. Every day or two I strolled to thevillage to hear some of the gossip which is incessantly going onthere, circulating either from mouth to mouth, or from newspaper tonewspaper, and which, taken in homoeopathic doses, was really asrefreshing in its way as the rustle of leaves and the peeping offrogs. As I walked in the woods to see the birds and squirrels, soI walked in the village to see the men and boys; instead of the windamong the pines I heard the carts rattle. In one direction from myhouse there was a colony of muskrats in the river meadows; under thegrove of elms and buttonwoods in the other horizon was a village ofbusy men, as curious to me as if they had been prairie-dogs, eachsitting at the mouth of its burrow, or running over to a neighbor'sto gossip. I went there frequently to observe their habits. Thevillage appeared to me a great news room; and on one side, tosupport it, as once at Redding & Company's on State Street, theykept nuts and raisins, or salt and meal and other groceries. Somehave such a vast appetite for the former commodity, that is, thenews, and such sound digestive organs, that they can sit forever inpublic avenues without stirring, and let it simmer and whisperthrough them like the Etesian winds, or as if inhaling ether, itonly producing numbness and insensibility to pain -- otherwise itwould often be painful to bear -- without affecting theconsciousness. I hardly ever failed, when I rambled through thevillage, to see a row of such worthies, either sitting on a laddersunning themselves, with their bodies inclined forward and theireyes glancing along the line this way and that, from time to time,with a voluptuous expression, or else leaning against a barn withtheir hands in their pockets, like caryatides, as if to prop it up.They, being commonly out of doors, heard whatever was in the wind.
